The Art of Crafting an Embodiment of Love

Customisation and exquisite craftsmanship are the key to exclusivity, something that jewellery has long been associated with. More than just a unique design, a bespoke piece of jewellery tells the story of a treasured bond, celebrates special occasions, and captures love and emotion like no other gift can.

But how has bespoke jewellery evolved over the centuries and become a word synonymous with the luxury goods industry? The concept itself dates back to 18th century England, with the emergence of London’s famous Savile Row, a premier tailoring destination for men’s clothing that is renowned for its refined craftsmanship, sophistication and design that is tailored to each customer’s unique tastes.

With time, the term bespoke has evolved, and now encapsulates luxury products, especially jewellery that has been designed to tell a story and represent the individuality of the one it adorns. In doing so bespoke jewellery becomes a unique style statement and an exclusive part of the one wearing it.

With patrons of high-end luxury keepsakes looking for an extension of themselves and the epitome of a luxury experience, bespoke services are on the rise and offer intimate and personalised experiences to clients around the world.

Majliya’s Bespoke Process

Initial Conversation and Design Consultation

Your bespoke journey begins with a complimentary in-person consultation at our studio. This is where the Design Manager gathers the basic information around the project, like your taste, initial ideas, and specific design requirements in order to create something personal and unique. In this first meeting we’ll ask you about your preferred metal, the gemstones you have in mind, and personalised customisations, like engraving.

Finalisation of Design

A hand sketch of your design will be created based on our initial consultation. Once this is approved, and after we have settled on a design and gemstone, we will issue you a final quote outlining all the project details for your confirmation and approval.

Handcrafting

The most intimate and magical part of the entire process, your design will be handcrafted to perfection in our workshop. The time required to create your jewel will vary depending on the intricacies of the design. If you have a specific date in mind that you would like your piece by, do communicate this with your design consultant to ensure a smooth turnaround. We will always do our best to accommodate your preferred timeline without compromising on craftsmanship.

The Reveal

Once your mesmerising piece has been crafted, we will invite you to our boutique to collect it. A masterpiece designed to be an extension of you, your bespoke piece is ready to be worn by you, and adored by your loved ones.

A Commitment to Preserve and Promote Arabian Culture and Jewellery

Shaped by History and Steeped in Tradition

The intricate journey of jewellery design and its evolvement is a shimmering story that dates back to antiquity.

Much like the rest of the world, the art of jewellery making in Arabia has been shaped over time, by the region’s culture and heritage. From Egypt in the west to Iran in the east, and from Turkey in the north to Oman in the south, the Middle East is a region rich in culture, history, heritage and exquisite craftsmanship.

The jewellery of the Arab world reflects this diversity and has been an important part of life of the people in the region. From being used as an adornment for traditional wear, to highlighting the social and economic status of its owner, Arab jewellery and its unique designs varies greatly from one country to the next.

Intricate designs seen in headpieces, necklaces, earrings and rings are an amalgamation of different styles and techniques of craftsmanship, often inspired by the surrounding topography, a country’s culture and tradition, references to the region’s history, and even the native flora and fauna.

Most often, jewellery designs can be traced back to certain tribes only, and can even determine the identity and region from which a woman is. These differences and similarities can weave stories of a region or people as they leave their footprints on the sands of time.

Modern Adaptations of Traditional Aspirations

Arabian jewellery has managed to maintain its distinct look for thousands of years by retaining the essential elements of tradition in its design. What has changed over time is the minimalistic approach to the design of aesthetic pieces of culture and heritage.

The juxtaposition of the modern with the traditional is an artistic expression of textures, shapes and designs that patrons of high-end luxury keepsakes are looking for.

With historical influences appearing more frequently in modern day Arabian jewellery, it is no wonder that an iconic brand like Majliya is leading the way in exquisitely designed collections that capture the rich heritage and culture of the region, all while expressing the pure individuality of the one it adorns.

Majliya’s Hirz, Amira and Mushawak collections are the perfect examples of modern interpretations of traditional jewellery. These intricately designed collections are deeply rooted in the region’s culture, mixing distinct elements to create opulent and stunning jewellery based on traditional designs.

Preserving Traditional Art For Future Generations

For millennia, silver has fascinated people with its attractive and malleable qualities. Silver ore that was initially discovered in Syria, Yemen and the region that is currently Turkey, made its way across the world through trade routes, enabling more and more countries, including Oman, to gain access to this valuable metal.

Nizwa, which was once the capital of Oman in the 6th and 7th centuries AD, was a renowned centre for silver, followed by the wilayats of Rustaq, Ibri and Sur. It was home to skilled silversmiths who designed and melded the metal through traditional handicraft techniques to create high-quality and state-of-the-art ornaments for members of royalty. Each wilayat had its own practices and designs, derived from respective cultures to create pieces that were unique to the region and received widespread acclaim.

Oman’s silver has been considered to be one of the highest in quality and has held prominence in the Arab world. Apart from being used for jewellery and accessories, it was also an integral part of traditional handicrafts, such as perfume bottles, small jewellery boxes, frankincense burners, dallah (traditional Omani coffee) and more. Deemed as heritage pieces, each item possesses inscriptions that are inspired by Islamic designs, Arabic calligraphy or local engravings.

Oman’s culture, heritage and history form its identity and is a way to tell the country’s story to the world. Efforts to preserve this legacy, are exemplified by Oman’s key landmarks and long-standing traditions, both of which are elements of the nation’s pride. This helps shape the values, beliefs and aspirations of the Omani people, allowing the wealth of knowledge and acquired skills to carry on for generations to come.

With its uncompromising quality, Majliya is committed to preserving Oman’s rich legacy of heritage and long-standing traditions. Through all its collections, Majliya endeavours, to create contemporary luxury pieces that embrace different elements of Oman’s traditions and are reshaped to meet the demands of a modern world, while simultaneously being a statement piece for each customer’s identity.

Cooler weather means more reason to go out. Visit places of interest or immerse yourself in the history of times past at heritage spots for a change of scene or even treks up the mountain. Wadi Darbat, one of the most picturesque and popular wadis in Dhofar, is completely enveloped with greeneries during the season. Situated in the Haffa district of Salalah, the Haffa Souq is a remarkable place for tourists and residents alike. It is home to makeshift shops that sell a variety of commodities, including frankincense, perfumes, local attire, handicraft and souvenirs. Take the opportunity to stand out from the crowd with pieces that have bold branding such as the Dots Collection, while still paying homage to the country’s rich heritage.

An extravagant event to remember

Throughout history, Arab weddings have always exuded luxury and tradition. Despite the transition of customs that are specific to the respective countries across the Arab region, the elements of culture and religious rituals remain the same, such as Al Henna, Al Melkah, Al Ers and Al Khotoba.

Before you enter into the connection of a lifetime, here are a few tips and trends to make your wedding even more unique and elegant.

  • Match earrings with your hairstyle

Finding the balance between your hairstyle and your earrings is essential to bringing out the features that best define “you”.

To start, short to shoulder-length or structured hairstyles are usually combined with delicate diamond earrings, such as the ones from the Mushawak Classic Collection.

In contrast, long, curly or voluminous hair works better with drop statement earrings, especially more so if it is worn down. The Dinar Classic Collection comprises detachable or customisable jewellery pieces that will ensure it will not be hidden by your locks but also not shift attention from your bridal glow.

Your wedding jewelry should be an accessory to your wedding dress and emphasise and accentuate the elegance and grace it holds.

  • Sentimentality is paramount

The perfect attire for a wedding differs across various generations. Your wedding should be a day that is celebrated with a focus on you and your loved one.

Family heirlooms that are passed on, bring with them the numerous memories it holds, ready to make new ones as you embark on a new stage in your life. Whether it is a favorite necklace from your mother, your aunt’s cherished bangle or your grandmother’s heritage piece from her wedding, they each showcase incredible significance to the holder. Taking it along with you, while dress shopping will help you with the decision in choosing the dress that complements it. This will prevent you from reconsidering making drastic last-minute changes to your ensemble while also indicating that this jewllery holds incredible meaning to you too.

  • Creativity with a personal touch

With stylish and creative designs being introduced almost every season, jewellery enthusiasts are looking to mix and match to blend in with current trends. As of late, we have witnessed more and more brides looking for state-of-the-art masterpieces that reflect their Arabian heritage and shop with brands that align with their own personal values. One notable sustainable approach has been brides looking for jewelers that have the skill and expertise in recutting or remaking a family heirloom or repurposing a jewel to suit a more contemporary style or setting.

Traditional wedding dresses are worn by the Omani bride and her family usually comprise of embroidery in bright colours of red and green. The Hirz Necklace/Murtasha adorns the bride’s neck, complemented by the Shambar headpiece. Jewellery around the wrists includes a pair of Teembi and Mushawak bangles and five distinct rings on each finger. Gabriya on the thumb, Shahid on the index, Murabba on the middle and Heisa and Shadabiyya on the ring and little fingers respectively. The attractive outfit is complete with exquisite anklets and a chin piece.

Whatever jewellery you choose, remember to make sure that it makes you feel comfortable, so that you can pull off the air of confidence and let your beauty shine on your special day.

Shine bright this summer

With the bright outlook of the forthcoming days, summer is the season to let your beauty shine. However, before you delve into your wardrobe, this thought might cross your mind – what items from my Jewellery will go best with my outfit?

Here are a few insights to help you put that extra sparkle and let your radiance glow.

  • Outfits with bold colours or busy patterns would preferably be well balanced with a simple statement jewel. Thin chains and singular pendants are an excellent combination to not take away attention from your outfit of choice but a distinctive embellishment.
  • Singular summer colour tones with shades from the monochromatic end of the spectrum are so in! Black, white and lighter colours of beige and nude keep your look simple and elegant. That’s where you can bring in the rings with vivid stone combinations that give your chosen style a little dazzle.
  • Nothing says chic with grace like an anklet and puts a spring in your step. Subtle, yet eye-catching, anklets pair well with jeans and summer dresses and are even more accentuated with open-toed footwear, backless loafers or flats.
  • Opposites attract! Depending on the colour tones of your outfit, switch up the hues. Warm colours with jewellery products with cooler tones and vice versa. Try different variations and you can even combine block colours like white and black outfits with either gold, silver, white or rose gold ornaments.

Ultimately what matters is finding a style that you’re comfortable with and what combinations work best for you. So go ahead, accessorise and seize the day – in your own way.

Trends to keep an eye out for to up your jewellery game

Like the seasons of the year, fashion trends are ever-changing and dynamic. So spark some joy this year and hone into your feel-good vibes that keep pace with the industry.

  • All about the ABCs: Nameplates and letter pendants are making a comeback. Personalise your name or a letter and pair it with another jewellery item every day.
